Objective

A simple football first touch drill designed to improve receiving skills, body position and passing accuracy. Players use their first touch to move the ball through or around the gate into space, helping them prepare the next action quickly and develop better passing and receiving habits. Progressions Choose the side - receiver decides whether to take the first touch left or right of the gate. Called direction - passer or coach calls left/right shortly before the ball arrives, forcing the receiver to react. Back-foot only - first touch must be taken with the back foot across the body. Weak foot - receive and/or pass using the weaker foot. One-touch return - if the first touch sets the ball cleanly, play the return pass immediately. Follow your pass - passer moves to the opposite end after playing the ball, creating continuous rotation and movement. Smaller gates - reduce gate width to demand greater first-touch accuracy. Greater distance - increase passing distance to challenge weight of pass and receiving technique. Passive pressure - add a recovering defender who applies light pressure after the first touch. Directional scoring - award a point when the receiver takes the ball through the correct side of the gate and completes the return pass.

Coaching points

  • Receive on the back foot where possible so the body is open to the next action.
  • Use the first touch to move the ball into useful space rather than stopping it underneath the body.
  • Scan before receiving so the player already knows which side of the gate they want to attack.
  • Use both feet and encourage players to receive on the half turn
  • Move after passing rather than standing still and watching the ball.
